OUR COMMITMENT TO SOCIETY

Titli: A child to child project In 1995 the students of Class 6 and 7 of St. Xaviers School had done a pilot project in social justice education initiated by ILO and had undergone a year long sensitsation about the issue of child labour. At the end of the project the students approached the headmaster and asked could the do something about child labour rather than study or listen or make posters about it ? Father Bruylants, the then headmaster was only too happy to comply. So a project was initiated by the school named Titli (Butterflies) for boys of neighbourhood slums. This project boasts about 132 students who are given pre vocational training in carpentry, banner writing, hand work, sketching and other related skills. Wives of Alumni contribute time for teaching these young children.ALSOC helps by contributing money to this worthy cause, organsies excursions, an electronic center, books. ALSOC first contributed towards this cause in 1998. The good work has continued since. The students of various classes teach these children as well as part of their classes through SUPW or Socially Useful and Productive Work.

Adopt A Boy The spirit of Adopt a Boy is steeped in Xaverian tradition. In the early twentieth century, Jagdish Chandra Bose, the great scientist who preceded Marconi in the invention of the radio never cared to patent his invention. Halfway through his schooling, his family could no longer afford the fees of the college, but he stayed on with a scholarship which the Old Boys Association had promoted basically for poor Anglo Indian students.Adopt a boy scheme, in its modern avatar, was formulated under Fr Bruylants when 10 needy students who could not bear the cost of rising school fees approached father for assistance. Fr. Then requested ALSOC towards their education. This scholarship program based on the fact that nobody should denied education on the basis of economic standing. This year 32 students have been adopted by ALSOC towards bearing their school fees.

The following are the various sponsorships for the adopt a boy scheme.Rs. 30,000 (Which can provide for the school fees of THREE boys for ONE year) Rs. 20,000 (Which can provide for the school fees of TWO boys for one year)Rs. 10,000 ( Which can provide for the school fees of ONE boy for ONE year)Rs.(Which can provide for the school fees of boys for ONE year)

AlSoc Clinic The charitable clinic of St.Xaviers Old Boys Association called Alumnorum Societas was started by the patronage of Fr.Vernon Debruslais who was himself an old boy our beloved instituition. The free clinic was started in the year 1977, ie even before our organisation was registered.

In the initial phase it used to run on every Thursdsay in the Music room of the Primary Department. After about 3 to 4 years of continuous running the clinic used to be held every Sunday mornings. Father Deb, as he was affectionately called, used to personally look after the running of the clinic after the Sunday mass at the chapel. The clinic had its first fixed venue in a small asbestos thatched room beside the school auditorium. This was started on the 18th of April, 1988.Slowly the number of patients began to rise and Fr. Deb was very contented with the simple but effective service we could render to the poor and the needy. Thereafter a mobile van was also procured which catered to the poor and the marginalized people of the Calcutta suburbs. The new premise where it proudly stands now beside Soumitra Sadan was inaugurated on the 11th of April 1999. The oldest philanthropic project of ALSOC was also renamed ALSOC CLINIC. The functioning was reorganized and the stress was laid in treating mostly young children and their mothers, which are the two most vulnerable cross section of our society.

A lofty dream of making the St. Xaviers Campus a disease free zone was put to action by ensuing a massive drive of Immunising the Titli kids against Hepatits and Typhoid. After its successful implementation the same drive was organised for the demand of expanding the horizon of our philanthropic activities of ALSOC.

Rural Medical Care Foray After running the clinic for many years, it was felt that we were only serving the urban population who had many outlets for availing health services in the city proper but what about the suffering humanity in the villages ? Thus a Rural Training Programme was planned and was approved by the governing body of ALSOC.The first training workshop on Essential New Born Care at Grassroots level was organized at Ghatal (Midnapore West) on the 26th of May, 2002. Here about more than 600 male and female health workers attended the training and the programme was a grand success. The spirit of success and our motto Nihil Ultra prompted us to organize even bigger mass education programmes on New Born Care in different sub divisions in the district.

Succor for victims of Calamities ALSOC has tried to help in its own small way whenever there has been a national calamity or distress. In 1998 when there was a flood in Malda ALSOC donated to the Chief Ministers Fund. Then in 1999 at the time of the Kargil war where the nations soldiers were fighting on the front ALSOC contributed to the Army Central Welfare Fund essentially to support the families of those brave soldiers who lost their lives defending our country.Soon after there was a huge cyclone in Orissa and ALSOC again donated to the affected people. In 2000, when Gujarat was affected by a huge earthquake which destroyed entire townships, ALSOC felt the need to contribute. In West Bengal in the same year there were floods in the Kalna area and ALSOC contributed to the flood affected people of this area.
