ALSOC Projects - Current - Our Commitment to Society
TITLI: A child to child project
In 1995 the students of Class 6 and 7 of St. Xaviers School had done
a pilot project in social justice education initiated by ILO and had
undergone a year long sensitsation about the issue of child labour.
At the end of the project the students approached the headmaster and
asked - could the do something about child labour rather than study
or listen or make posters about it ?
Father Bruylants, the then headmaster was only too happy to comply.
So a project was initiated by the school named Titli (Butterflies)
for boys of neighborhood slums.
ALSOC helps financially by contributing money to this worthy cause,
organizes excursions, an electronic center, books. ALSOC first
contributed towards this cause in 1998. The good work has continued
since. From current year, 2011, Titli has been renamed St. Xavier's
Evening School.

ADOPT A BOY SCHEME
The spirit of Adopt a Boy is steeped in Xaverian tradition. In the
early twentieth century, Jagdish Chandra Bose, the great scientist
who preceded Marconi in the invention of the radio never cared to
patent his invention. Halfway through his schooling, his family
could no longer afford the fees of the college, but he stayed on
with a scholarship which the Old Boys Association had promoted
basically for poor Anglo Indian students.
Adopt a boy scheme, in its modern avatar, was formulated under Rev
Fathers when 10 needy students who could not bear the cost of rising
school fees approached father for assistance. Fr. Then requested
ALSOC towards their education. This scholarship program based on the
fact that nobody should denied education on the basis of economic
standing.
Way back in 1989, the members of the governing body of Alsoc adopted
a resolution, which started the ADOPT-A-BOY scheme so that no
students of St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata would be
deprived education due to sudden drastic fall of income in the
family. We are pleased to inform that Alsoc remained committed to
this noble cause and continued to donate to the school as asked for
by the school authorities with the support of our members and well
wishers. In keeping with our principles the names of the students so
helped are known only to the Rev Fathers.
Friends, you are no doubt aware that school fees of most of the
English medium schools have gone up substantially due to the
spiraling price index and St. Xavier's is no exception. Currently,
tution fees per student per annum at St. Xavier's is Rs. 20,000/-
and above, plus other applicable charges. This would call for a
similar level of increase in support for the Alumnorum Societas to
at least sustain the number of assisted students at the higher level
of costs. In this background all the members of Alumnorum Societas
and well-wishers are requested to come forward and donate generously
to this noble cause. With a contribution of only Rs. 20,000/-, you
will provide for the school fee of one boy for one year. This can
bring hope and joy to a child that will make a difference to his
life and to your own.

Act, 1961. PAN No. AAATA4446L.

ALSOC CLINIC
The charitable clinic of St. Xavier's Old Boys' Association called
Alumnorum Societas was started by the patronage of Fr. Vernon
Desbruslais who was himself an old boy of our beloved institution.
The free clinic was started in the year 1977, i.e. even before our
organization was registered.
In the initial phase it used to run on every Thursday in the Music
room of the Primary Department. After about 3 to 4 years of
continuous running the clinic used to be held every Sunday mornings.
Father Deb, as he was affectionately called, used to personally look
after the running of the clinic after the Sunday mass at the chapel.
The clinic had its first fixed venue in a small asbestos thatched
room beside the school auditorium. This was started on the 18th of
April, 1988.
Slowly the number of patients began to rise and Fr. Deb was very
contented with the simple but effective service we could render to
the poor and the needy. Thereafter a mobile van was also procured
which catered to the poor and the marginalized people of the
Calcutta suburbs.
The new premise where it proudly stands now beside Soumitra Sadan
was inaugurated on the 11th of April 1999. The oldest philanthropic
project of ALSOC was also renamed ALSOC CLINIC. The functioning was
reorganized and the stress was laid in treating mostly young
children and their mothers, which are the two most vulnerable cross
section of our society.
A lofty dream of making the St. Xavier's Campus a disease free zone
was put to action by ensuing a massive drive of immunizing the Titli
kids against Hepatitis "B" and Typhoid. After its successful
implementation the same drive was organized for the demand of
expanding the horizon of our philanthropic activities of ALSOC.
BAGI SCHOOL PROJECT: We have continued financial support to
Bagi Pouribala Bar Pravabati Mondal Balika Vidyalaya (Bagi School)
situated in a remote village in 24-Parganas (South) which is
dominated by scheduled castes/tribes with the main object of
spreading education for the girl child outside the city limits.
Alsoc had planned a roadmap to change the entire environment of the
school. This Bagi School has become a role model to other Jesuit
alumni institutions.
